Preventing Decay
Concerned parents' most common question when their child has cavities is "How can they be prevented?" Most children snack too frequently. The most important change parents need to teach their children is good eating habits. Contrary to popular belief, candy is not necessarily more harmful to the teeth than more nutritious foods. It is not the quality of the food that makes decay. It is not the quantity of the food that makes decay. It is mostly the frequency of eating that causes cavities. The problem with candy is that candy is so conducive for snacking. Snacking is the problem! When your child eats anything containing sugar, the sugar is metabolized to acid by the bacteria in the plaque on the teeth. The acid immediately begins to demineralize the teeth. Even brushing soon after eating will not help. It can take about 20 minutes for the saliva to neutralize the acid. If no more food is eaten, calcium dissolved in the saliva will precipitate out onto the enamel and remineralize the teeth. The bacteria do not care if the sugar is refined sugar, as in a cookie, or natural sugar, as in an apple. Brushing the teeth is important because it reduces the bacterial plaque, not because it removes the food particles. It is more important to remove the plaque well two times per day than it is to brush immediately after each meal. We can reduce the frequency of exposure to sugar by cutting down snacking. We can reduce the number of bacteria to metabolize the sugar to acid by brushing. And finally, we can actually make the enamel more resistant to acid by strengthening the tooth with fluorides. Only by attacking the problem in all three ways can we hope to insure a good dental check-up.
